The Y.O. Ranch Hotel & Conference Center in Kerrville, Texas, is more than just a place to stay—it's a tribute to a cornerstone of Texas history. Named for the legendary Y.O. Ranch, the hotel embodies the spirit of the Old West and the enduring legacy of one of the state's most prominent ranching families.

The Roots: Captain Charles Schreiner and the Y.O. Ranch

The story begins not with a hotel, but with the massive ranch that inspired it.

  • The Founder: The Y.O. Ranch was established in 1880 by Captain Charles Schreiner, a French immigrant turned successful businessman and former Texas Ranger. Schreiner built a vast empire that included banks, retail stores, and ranchland totaling nearly 600,000 acres at its peak.

  • The Brand: When Schreiner purchased the land from Taylor and Clements, the cattle were already marked with the simple, clear "Y.O." brand. Being a practical man, Schreiner simply adopted the brand, and an icon of Texas heritage was born.

  • The Cattle King: Schreiner amassed his fortune in part by driving more than 300,000 head of Texas Longhorns "up the trail" to markets like Dodge City, Kansas, in the post-Civil War era, an effort that helped fund his ranching enterprise.

A New Era: Charles Schreiner III and Diversification

The ranch, passed down through generations, survived World War I, the Great Depression, and severe droughts, largely due to the foresight and resilience of the Schreiner family.

  • Hunting and Tourism: The first signs of diversification came in the 1940s when Captain Schreiner’s grandson, Charles Schreiner III (affectionately known as "Charlie Three"), began to shift the focus. His mother, Myrtle Schreiner, was one of the first Texas ranchers to lease land for hunting white-tail deer.

  • Exotic Wildlife: Charlie Three truly revolutionized the ranch in the 1950s by introducing exotic animal species, an effort that earned the ranch the nickname "America's Original Game Ranch." This visionary move blended conservation with commerce, ensuring the ranch's survival and creating a new revenue stream through hunting and tourism.

  • Saving the Longhorns: In a profound nod to Texas heritage, he also spearheaded efforts to save the Texas Longhorn breed from extinction, co-founding the Texas Longhorn Breeders' Association of America in 1964.

The Hotel: Bringing the Legend to Kerrville

As the Y.O. Ranch evolved into a popular tourist destination, there was a growing need for accommodations for visitors to the area.

  • A Place to Stay: The Schreiner family, already instrumental in the growth of Kerrville by founding the first bank and utility companies, decided to bring the ranching spirit to town. They built the Y.O. Ranch Hotel (which was at one point affiliated with the Hilton brand) to ensure guests had a comfortable place to stay.

  • An Authentic Western Experience: The hotel, while a modern conference center, was designed to immerse guests in the Old West. Throughout the sprawling property, you can discover 19th-century antiques, over 40 exotic game trophies, and massive chandeliers decorated with 390 branding irons—a nod to the great cattle drives.

  • Enduring Legacy: Today, the Y.O. Ranch Hotel & Conference Center continues to honor the rich history of the original Y.O. Ranch. Though the hotel has changed hands over the years, it preserves the authentic character of the Texas Hill Country and the spirit of a family that helped build Kerrville and define the ranching industry in Texas.
