Let’s Go to Luckenbach

January 06, 2020

Texas’ Hill Country offers an abundant assortment of nearby towns to visit. Most are less than an hour’s drive from Kerrville and make ideal day trips. One of the most interesting, and most famous, such destinations is Luckenbach, Texas. Luckenbach has been around for some time as a quiet little country town but became famous in the 1970s when both Jerry Jeff Walker and Waylon Jennings released songs about it. Although Jennings had never been to Luckenbach, his recording of Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love) rocketed to the top of the charts and put Luckenbach on the map.

These days, Luckenbach is famous for welcoming a myriad of members of the country music family—many of them performing in public at the town’s iconic dance hall, or just hanging out and playing a few tunes at the combination bar and general store, or outside under a nearby shade tree. Although it has become one of the largest tourism and entertainment destinations in the country, Luckenbach still beats with a small-town heart. So come on over, pull up a chair, and order a beer—you’re going to want to stay awhile.
